Don’t be afraid of change, it is leading you to a new beginning.

Don’t be afraid of change, it is leading you to a new beginning.

Right now I should be working on my classwork and last final since summer semester ends this week. However, I feel that it is a big responsibility and something that I owe to myself to always write a blog about my “Heartiversary”.

NINE years ago, I went to the emergency room from wrestling practice. I thought I was having an asthma attack. I had no idea then how much that entire day would change my life.

At some points, I feel like I had to grow up really fast in ways that a twenty-one year old shouldn’t have to. I gained so many fears because everything (or so I thought then) was changing for the bad and I was not sure why.

When the doctor rushed into my room after my EKG, he said, “If we let you go, you could walk up a flight of stairs and die.” I was so confused. How could something be wrong with my heart?!

I don’t want to go over everything that happened in every blog that I write about this. But I always want to acknowledge it and express how thankful I am that I am alive and that I–as strange as it sounds–went through this. It changed me for the better, even though I had no idea back then.

I have two “Heartiversary” dates for myself–the date that I was diagnosed, and the date that I was cured. It is only fitting to celebrate a struggle that you turned into something that fuels you.

Through it all, I learned courage. I learned that no matter what life throws at you, look it in the face and walk boldly through it. Never second guess yourself. Do what you feel is right and what you are passionate about. Live your life with no expectations except always giving it your best–even if your best doesn’t win you a prize, it’s still cool. Life is about moments. It’s about making memories. It’s about knowing every time that you fall you can get back up and try again. It’s about never giving up. It’s about doing good in the world and not needing recognition for it. It’s about following your heart and never taking a single breath for granted.

I leave you wish some words of wisdom:
“Life is change. Growth is optional.”
“We cannot become who we want to be by remaining what we are.”
“Nothing happens until the pain of remaining the same outweighs the pain of change.”
