I love to challenge myself… remember how I did the whole 365 photos/a photo of myself a day for a year thing two years in a row (a few years ago)? Well, I wanted to do something different this time… something more meaningful.
To me, music speaks. I can feel the chords and rhythms take over when I put on certain songs… and they have also become almost like time capsules where they hold memories–good and bad–when I hear them played again. I decided it might be fun to see how many songs I actually have a story about. My musical taste spans across the board from post-hardcore to pop rock. Chances are, you may find a little Britney Spears mixed in with The Receiving End of Sirens.
I thought for post number 1, it was best to begin with my favorite song.
“Famous Last Words” – My Chemical Romance
Story: After I had heart surgery, I was really depressed and felt traumatized from how quickly everything had gone from being so fun and exciting to uncertainty and fright. At the time, My Chemical Romance had just released a new album, The Black Parade; a concept album about a patient. I felt like I related to the album from the very beginning because of the lyrics, “Come one, come all to this tragic affair…,” as well as, “…found a complication in your heart, so long…” The very last track on the album is called, “Famous Last Words.” My closet doors were both mirrored at the time, and I took a dry erase marker and wrote really large across the top of it, “I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone.” That was what I wanted. That was my goal. I wanted to find my way there because I hated being scared everyday. The song became my little candle in the dark that got brighter and brighter. That may seem like a creepy meaning but it’s really not–it’s such a happy song for me to hear because I remember the hope that it gave me so the memory is wonderful. “Awake and unafraid.”
